Glasgow and the Commonwealth Games 🏋️‍♂️

Commonwealth Games are back in Glasgow. After the beautiful opening ceremony last week, I was so excited to visit the games in person for the first time in my life. And I did!

With Glasgow being the centre of attention for the next few days, I thought I'd share a few quirks of this city with you inspired by a few stills from the opening ceremony. 

(If you've read my Glasgow-based books, some of these names will be familiar to you.) 

OYO Hydro

The Hydro where the ceremony took place sits on the banks of the Clyde. This venue has hosted some huge concerts over the years. And it sits right next to the SEC where most of the games are being held this year.

Tardis and Glasgow

The ceremony had the King and Queen arrive at the venue in Doctor Who's Tardis. Glasgow has a few blue booths with 'Police' signs on them. And they aren't just for show! Some of them are coffee shops and mini-food stops where you can get a to-go coffee or piece (that's what a sandwich is called in Scotland).

People Make Glasgow

Glasgow's slogan reads 'People Make Glasgow'. As someone who moved here almost four years ago, I can testify that no slogan would better suit this city. Just like my characters, the people of Glasgow are varied, and of course, one of the friendliest in the world.  

The Murals

The backdrop to one of the songs at the opening ceremony were Glasgow's murals. In the city centre, where most of my books are based, you'll find huge murals on empty building walls. For eg: There is a huge mural in a parking lot in the city centre, featured in Between The Lies. Some of these murals have cultural significance like those of St Mungo, Glasgow's patron saint, holding a Robin. It signifies one of the miracles of this saint. The others displayed at the ceremony last night were those of St Mungo's mother, St Enoch. She's the one St Enoch's Square is named after.

The City Chambers

Let's end with the spot where the ceremony began. The beautiful arch under which the Tardis was sitting, is the building where Glasgow's City Chambers are. It's a stunning building that sits on George Square. While the square is currently under construction (you'll read my frustrations about it in Dangerous Escape!), the city chambers takes up a large block in the city centre.
